Red Apsara Nymph Sandstone Sculpture
Beautiful and sensuous, this Apsara was originally carved in one of the Khajuraho temples in Madhya Pradesh. A nymph in the kingdom of the Hindu deities, an Apsara seduces with her dance. Brijesh Kumar sculpts this red sandstone replica with exceptional detail, faithful to the original. The Khajuraho temples are adorned with myriad sculptures, including graceful "maidens" in a variety of provocative postures, dancers, musicians and embracing couples. They are believed to represent the Tantric practices that took place as a form of worship in the temples. -About the Artist: "My father worked as a stone carver for more than 35 years. A lot of hard work goes into making this type of sculptures. Growing up around my father's mesmerizing sculptures inspired me. I always wondered how such beautiful figures could emerge from a simple block of stone, and this fantasy made me join my father in his art. The techniques used for sculpting are quite painstaking as the process is 100 percent handcrafted. When I finish a sculpture, I feel happy and proud to have created such a beautiful piece of art. My sculptures exhibit the rich tradition of Indian art, especially the one found in ancient temples. My father and I have made several sculptures over the years, but the one that remains special to us is a 7 foot Buddha we worked on together." -The Brijesh Kumar Artisan Collection is brought to you by Novica in Association with National Geographic.
